Electrical Heat Trace

Electrical heat trace systems are a versatile and effective tool for the monitoring and control of the temperature of piping, vessels and equipment, ensuring system readiness and reliable, efficient operation for a wide variety of industrial  and commercial applications. These custom-tailored solutions provide the end user with the means to achieve their desired level of thermodynamic stability and control via an integrated system of specialized cables and components, designed to meet their needs without compromise. Whether protecting pipes and equipment from damage due to freezing temperatures, maintaining product and process temperatures for optimal efficiency and production or ensuring the readiness of emergency backup equipment by maintaining optimal startup conditions, heat tracing is essential for operational continuity and safety.

Anchor Insulation has incorporated the design, installation and maintenance of electrical heat trace systems into its portfolio of customized solutions deployed to meet the needs of customers across a wide variety of industries. With decades of experience, and partnerships with leading manufacturers, we are proud to support our clients in their pursuit of increased operational efficiency, reduced downtime and peace of mind.

How Electrical Heat Trace Works

Electrical heat trace systems utilize specialized electrical cables to transmit precisely controlled heat to the objects to which they are attached. This process prevents freezing in cold environments and ensures precise temperature maintenance in industrial applications.

There are three primary types of electrical heat trace systems:

  • Self-regulating heat trace: Self-regulating cable is engineered to operate within well-defined temperature ranges, making it ideal for applications with strict upper-limit temperatures.  When the circuit energizes and begins heating, resistance decreases in proportion to temperature, ensuring that the cable will not exceed it’s design rating.
  • Constant wattage heat trace: Provides a steady heat level, ideal for applications requiring uniform temperature maintenance and applications that exceed the maximum circuit length of self-regulating cables.
  • Mineral-Insulated (MI) heat trace: Ideal for high-temperature systems with intermittent operation, start-up preheat and readiness of critical operational and emergency backup systems.

Anchor Insulation prioritizes customized heat trace solutions that optimize efficiency while ensuring long-term reliability. Our experts install systems that offer superior performance and energy savings by considering factors such as pipe material, environmental conditions and operational needs.

Applications of Electrical Heat Trace

Electrical heat trace systems provide critical temperature management across multiple applications, including:

  • Freeze protection: Prevents frozen pipes and equipment in water lines, fire suppression systems and other critical assets that are expected to provide uninterrupted operation in cold weather.
  • Process temperature maintenance: Keeps industrial fluids at precise temperatures, preventing viscosity changes and maintaining consistent product quality.
  • Critical asset readiness: Maintains optimal start-up conditions for temperature-sensitive equipment such as steam and gas turbines, emergency generators and pumps and other critical equipment.  Increase readiness by reducing downtime and activation lag of operational, standby or emergency backup assets.
  • Roof and gutter de-icing: Minimizes the risk of ice dams and snow accumulation, protecting building structures and improving drainage efficiency.
  • Floor heating solutions: Enhances comfort in commercial and residential spaces while improving energy efficiency through targeted heat distribution.
